On September 11 & 12, 2021, Leighton Art Centre celebrated Alberta Culture Days with our Paint The Foothills plein air weekend. This year’s plein air party included the launch of our annual juried plein air exhibition In The Open Air, a Plein Air Art Sale, Plein Air Paint Out and 2nd Annual Plein Air Competition, as well as a number of Plein Air Art Workshops, for a range of skill levels!

We were thrilled to welcome over 20 officially registered competition painters, who braved very cool, extremely foggy conditions to produce some fantastic plein air works.

Plein Air Competition Award Winners

Congratulations to Gwen Day, Gerry Mulhall and Theresa Williams, respectively, for taking home the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place awards in our Paint The Foothills Plein Air Competition! Doug Williamson was awarded the Swinton’s Award (for best capture of the atmosphere of the paint out). The Rose Baxter People’s Choice award winner was selected by our visitors (with 115 ballots cast)… and Gwen Day and Theresa Williams tied! Our anonymous donor generously agreed to award the $250 cash prize to each artist.

Prizes were sponsored by Swinton’s Art Supply, Leighton Art Centre and an anonymous donor, with the total value equalling $1600!

Thank you to judges Doug Swinton, Neil Patterson and Christina Cuthbertson (Executive Director) and of course Lindsay Corbet (Manager of Exhibitions, Events & Volunteers), who is the force behind this event. Congratulations to all of the award winners and thank you to all of the artists who participated!
