Forest Bathing

with Alberta DeFrancesco

Description: Come experience a series of guided meditations that will bring you into the present moment, opening the doors of connection to nature and the senses. Each walk is approximately 3 hours long and only covers a small amount of distance (roughly 1km). To complete the experience there is a gesture of reciprocity which involves having some tea and a snack to complete our time together.

*Please note that the fee for this workshop includes admittance to our historic museum , walking paths and art gallery on the property, which can be enjoyed at your own discretion after the workshop is completed. What is Forest Bathing? Shirin-Yoku, which is the Japanese practice of Forest Bathing, means to bath in the atmosphere of the forest. It refers to the practice of spending time in nature for the purpose of health, wellness and happiness. It is the practice of connection with the natural world and with each other. Forest Bathing is a slow-paced/ gentle walk or wander in nature. Science has also shown the health benefits of spending time in nature. People who spend time in the forest experience a decrease in stress levels, improve outlook, focus, and energy, as well as many other health benefits.

Audience: 18 +

Supplies: Please bring your own water bottle. Please dress in comfortable clothing and appropriately for the weather. A studio space will be available as a backup in the event of unfavourable weather. You may also bring a journal (optional) for reflection.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Please note there is a NO REFUND policy on all Leighton Art Centre workshops. A refund will only be issued to participants if the workshop is cancelled by the workshop coordinator due to insufficient enrollment, extreme weather conditions, or Covid-19 restrictions. Workshops may be cancelled prior to the start date and participants will be notified via email and/or phone, and a full refund will be processed.

Withdrawal from workshops for medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor’s medical note or a positive COVID 19 rapid test and must be received by the Leighton workshop coordinator prior to the workshop start date to be qualified for a full refund.

Artist/ Instructor Biography: Alberta DeFrancesco is a locally based artist, naturalist, teacher and guide. Growing up in Alberta, she has been surrounded by some of the most majestic landscapes and environments. Being able to combine her love of nature and the outdoors has led her to the path of becoming a guide. Certified as an Apprentice Interpretive Guide and Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, Alberta has a combined 10 years of experience of spending meaningful time in nature.
