Lessons in Batik were the first classes offered at the Leighton Art Centre, taught by Barbara Leighton. Batik is a method of dying textile using a wax resist. Wax is applied in dots and lines, or printed with a copper stamp called a cap. Colour is then applied selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax, and repeating if multiple colours are desired. Barbara also created patterned textiles using stamps and ink.
