FREE! the Family that Paints Together Workshop

In this course you will be creating a plein air painting as your child also paints their own version of the scene. We learn from each other. We will be discussing how to paint outside, using viewfinders, limiting palette colours, mixing colour, and painting through observation.

Each child must be accompanied by an adult— so this is time to call up the aunties, uncles, family friends, and grandparents to join you. This will be a joyful and fun activity and maybe the start of something new for you and your child!

Audience:  For ages 5 and up; beginners to intermediate. Registration will be in pairs — so each child has an adult with them.

Weather: In case of rain, activities will be performed inside the museum or one of the art studios of the Leighton Art Centre. Extremely poor weather may result in cancellation. .

Supplies: Will be supplied by the Leighton Art Centre thanks to funding from Alberta Culture Days! This is an outdoor workshop, so please wear weather appropriate clothing, and don’t forget to pack your bug spray, sunscreen, hat, jacket, a water bottle, snacks, and anything else you may need to enjoy your day!

Optionally, you and your family may want to bring your own sketchbook and pencils to draw along the way. Families are welcome to bring their own picnic to enjoy after the workshop!

Registration cost:  Free BUT please reserve your spot!!! Registration is first come, first served. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Please register as a pair: a single ticket = registration for a parent and child!

Artist/Instructor/Guide

A. S. Helwig was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. From an early age she drew and painted. In fact, she has painted in acrylics since she was 14 years old in the coulee hills close to her family home. Helwig took a two-year commercial art program at the Medicine Hat College and then a Bachelor of Education Degree (with Distinction) from the University of Lethbridge. Looking for adventure Helwig moved to Fox Lake, a small remote Indian village in Northern Alberta. There she taught English and art while maintaining a studio in her home.

Presently residing in Calgary, Helwig remains an art educator and studio artist. Bluerock Gallery in Black Diamond, Mountain Galleries in Banff and Jasper, and Rouge in Saskatoon represent her work.

Helwig’s award winning paintings are also in many private and public art collections.
