Bridges

Alberta Society of Artists 85th Anniversary Celebration

September 24, 2016 @ 8:00 am - October 30, 2016 @ 5:00 pm

The Alberta Society of Artists is celebrating their 85th Anniversary. What better way to celebrate than with an exhibit at the Leighton Art Centre where it’s founder, AC Leighton lived!

Bridges link things that are separated by obstacles or otherwise not connected in an accessible way. A bridge can be physical, joining two plaes:a road, a path, a rail line, the ferry route acrss a anal, the wind tunnel trajectory of a plane in flight. Bridges mobilize us in geographic space andconnect us to the things we do, the people we know, the places we’ve come from and to which we are going. A bridge can also be ephemeral: a feeling, a memory, a dream, a vision, a brainwave. An acto of love or compssion mends a rifts between people. A strain of music opens a channel for spiritual experience. A family home remembered links generations. In so many ways, bridges make our lives happen, but bridges do not simply exist; we build them, and maintain them, and when necessary we tear them down to build new ones elsewhere.

The ASA selected 24 works by 17 artists. These works explore bonds, spans, connections in their mainfold tangible and intangible expressions and manifestations. In this exhibition, bridges evidence mechanical and human strength; bridges link artistic media and creative methods; bridges connect countries and geological phenomena; bridges unite body and soul, matter and spirit, inner and outer worlds; and bridges span time – simultaneously remembering the past, imagining the future, and callng attention to thepresent moment, the bridge itself.
